To His Coy Mistress (Andrew Marvell)

...weeeell...this is such a quaint poem, don't you think? (see what i did there??) anyways, let us analyze. So, in this poem, an awful, immoral guy is trying to "sweet" (or maybe not so sweet) talk this girl into having sex with him. i mean really? if that's your goal, you really shouldn't start off by saying "if i had all the time in the world, i'd love you for real and spend one fifth of my time looking at your eyes and four fifths of it looking at your boobs. Buddy, that is so not turning anyone on.
Then he very lovingly points out that if she doesn't do it with him now, no one will ever want to do it with her and she'll die a virgin (don't want that do you?) and she'll then lose the virginity of her decomposing body to a bunch of earth worms. nice...you're doing great man. i'm sure she's really feeling it now, right?
then he wraps it all up by repeating his request and calling her a bird of prey, which is a great move because i know i always feel really sexy when people insinuate that i like to tear up/eat raw flesh...
so ladies, do you think he's really all that much better than the worms? i'm not so sure.

names in the sand

(sonnet 75) so what i got from this sonnet is that this man wants to immortalize his lady, so he writes her name in the sand on the beach. but then the waves come and wash it away. so he tries again and the same thing happens.she tells him that trying to immortalize something in such a mortal way just isn't going to work out and that all things end and that's just the way it is. he retaliates, saying that when their love becomes immortal, her name will be written in the stars, where no waves will ever erase it...

now i dunno about you guys, but i've written names in the sand before and it takes quite a while for the waves to come in and wash them away, so just considering that he waited there long enough to do the whole thing twice....that's gotta be true love. she kept saying nothing goes on forever, and eventually she's going to die, but i don't think spencer was trying to make her immortal, just her love and virtues, if that makes sense. anyways, nice sonnet spencer! i liked the image of the beach and the night sky full of stars. :)
