names in the sand

(sonnet 75) so what i got from this sonnet is that this man wants to immortalize his lady, so he writes her name in the sand on the beach. but then the waves come and wash it away. so he tries again and the same thing happens.she tells him that trying to immortalize something in such a mortal way just isn't going to work out and that all things end and that's just the way it is. he retaliates, saying that when their love becomes immortal, her name will be written in the stars, where no waves will ever erase it...

now i dunno about you guys, but i've written names in the sand before and it takes quite a while for the waves to come in and wash them away, so just considering that he waited there long enough to do the whole thing twice....that's gotta be true love. she kept saying nothing goes on forever, and eventually she's going to die, but i don't think spencer was trying to make her immortal, just her love and virtues, if that makes sense. anyways, nice sonnet spencer! i liked the image of the beach and the night sky full of stars. :)
